San Francisco Visual Creative Community from 1945 to 1970

This era of San Francisco was a golden age, a camelot and a turning point in its history. It ushered in an incredibly productive group of creative people just back from the war and looking for fresh air and sunshine. North Beach, once a quiet Italian neighborhood became the hub of the Beat generation and paved the way for the hippies of Haight Ashbury. The exuberance of life around the bay was felt everywhere from Juanita’s ferry boat in Sausalito to Enrico’s Coffee House on Broadway. The infectious creative atmosphere where anything was possible. This site is a celebration of those people and that time.

While the creative community is not limited to the visual arts this site sits as a reminder of images and items not lost — just momentarily misplaced.

This is not a private site. It is a communal repository for Bay Area potters, photographers, painters, jewelers, graphic designers, illustrators, art directors, printmakers and sculptors who came to the Bay Area after the Second World War and created the golden age of creativity. The thought of so many of these creative works lost from sight and memory is imaginable. These creatives changed the way we see and do things. While many of the most famous are still remembered, many are not. There is no way for me to personally complete this library. You can contribute your knowledge and images to this catalog. Don’t let them fade away. They are our history. Sorry no Haight Ashbury, there are enough sites as it is. Upload names, bios, accomplishments, images and credits. Since this community is working pre 1970 that is the time limit for inclusion.
